Washington Filmworks Internship Opportunity! Washington Filmworks is seeking an Intern! www.washingtonfilmworks.org

Washington Filmworks (WF), is a not-for-profit 501 (c) (6) organization that offers production assistance to commercials, television and feature films shooting in Washington State as well as manages the production incentive program. Currently, WF is seeking a part-time Intern with a minimum 3-month commitment of 15 hours per week. Prior background in film not required, but individuals must be self-motivated with strong communication, computer, writing, and organizational/research skills.

Applicants must be enrolled in a post-secondary educational program leading to an undergraduate or graduate degree and in good standing at their college or university. Students must retain their status until the end of the internship.

Detailed Job Responsibilities Include:

I was in Yakima Valley over the weekend and talked to several people in the area wineries--quite of few of them Cougs. In talking about WSU, the DTC degree came up and, without exception, they said something like--wow, we so need a person like that!

So as you're job hunting, make sure you take a look at all kinds of possibilities including industries that you might not have thought of before. Almost every industry with a public "face" needs someone like you! Remember too, that Washington state has a huge food industry--fruit, potatoes and much, much more. The groups promoting and selling our food crops might need a person with abilities like yours.

Graphic Novel Talk

Artist Jim Woodring will present an informal talk about his latest wordless graphic novel titled 'Weathercraft' at 9:10am on Tuesday the 9th in room 7086 in the Fine Arts Center.

Woodring's works are published through Fantagraphics in Seattle, and he also exhibits paintings and objects internationally. Jim Woodring’s cartoons chart a course through some of the most surreal imagery ever seen in any artistic medium, drawing visions from the realms of the subconscious to create a graphic world of dreams. But while his work may speak in the language of dreams, Woodring’s life has often led him into nightmare territory.

Spring 2009 DTC graduate Brenden Martin will be on campus Friday, Oct. 9 in the Bundy to present a job search seminar for DTC, Rhetoric and Professional Writing, and other interested majors.

Brenden majored in DTC with a Media Authoring Concentration and a Business Administration Minor. He conducted a successful job search and was offered seven jobs.

Brenden now works on Wunderman’s Team Microsoft as a Media Planner.

Come Friday to listen to Brenden talk about his job strategy and his first few months as a Wunderman employee.

DTC Majors,

You will soon be receiving an email inviting you to an informational meeting about possible DTC Internships through the Center for Civic Engagement. For those who don't know or haven't quite conceptualized it yet, in order to graduate with a DTC degree you need at least 3 credits worth of an internship. This needs to be a position related to DTC in some way, can be done locally or remotely, and can be paid or unpaid. In order to receive the 3 credits, you sign up for English 498 and promise to do 150hrs of work over the course of a semester. Ultimately it is your responsibility to find an internship, but we will help as much as we can.

The upcoming meeting with CCE will explain the different types of opportunities available through their office. Additionally, they will want to hear from you about the types of positions you desire, feel comfortable with, etc. In particular, we need to work on making sure the position asks for technical skills that you either have already or can learn on the job.

So, keep an eye out for this email and if you haven't done an internship yet, please try to make it to the meeting on October 5th @ 4pm.

Certification Details

To apply for certification a student must have the following:

1) 24 credit hours;

2) a minimum 2.2 gpa;

3) one credit of ENGL 300 with evidence of projects OR sufficient evidence of facility in web authoring, animation, video production, and/or graphic design;

4) and a written statement of purpose (approximately 500-750 words) explaining how the DTC major supports the student’s career goals.

The certification forms can be found online at the DTC website or can be picked up at the door of Avery 223. They are available now and are due by Oct. 16 at 5:00 pm. No late or incomplete applications will be accepted.

Fall 2009 Certification*

Overview

Because of high demand for the major, DTC Pullman has instituted a certification process. The process is detailed below. Please read all information carefully. Incomplete applications will not be considered. There are approximately 30 openings in Fall semester.

Application Process

Certification Applications are due no later than 5:00 pm on Oct. 16. Late applications will not be considered.

Certification Forms can be found at the DTC Website or outside the Avery 223 office door. Each application must be accompanied by a signed Certification Form. (These forms will be available starting Sept. 1.)

Applications can be sent via email to the DTC Director Dr. Ericsson ericsson@wsu.edu or handed in at the English Department main desk (Avery Hall 202).

Via email: label the subject line as “DTC Certification.”

Via English Department.: put application materials in an appropriately sized envelope or binder and clearly label as “DTC Certification.”

Review Process

Certification applications will be reviewed by a committee that includes the DTC Coordinator, one DTC faculty member, the Director of Undergraduates Studies, and one DTC instructor or a graduate student teaching DTC courses. Students will be placed in rank order and the top students will be certified based on how many spots are available.

Results of the Certification process will be emailed to students and to their academic advisors. Unsuccessful applicants may reapply the following semester.

* If you are already certified as a DTC major, you do not have to apply. If you are not sure if you are certified, check your DARS or contact your advisor.

New Section of FA 332 Opened

I just got word that the FA Dept has opened a new section of FA 332 Intro to Digital Media 1 – Print/web, Tu-Th 9:10-11:40 for Fall 2009. There are some pre-reqs, but students who feel they are qualified can speak with the instructor, Reza Safavi, in August. Please spread the word!

Another DTC Success Story

May 2009 graduate Nick Winters was recently hired by his internship boss and is now the Webmaster and General Manager for a new web design business,Cascade Web Solutions (CWS), in Wenatchee, Washington. He just finished publishing the base site for CWS. CWS was actually created by Nick's boss while he was interning and now it has become a reality. Nick comments that "Right now our business site is somewhat basic, but we plan to add more content in the near future. We're just too busy with actual business!"

Nick closed his update email with a thank you and a promise to return to WSU. "Thank you for the great experience at WSU and I'm sure I'll see you and all of my fellow DTC friends and faculty once football season starts. "

Jobs for DTC Majors?? A Success Story!

In a tough economic market, we're interested in what jobs DTC grads are finding. Please let Dr. Arola and me know about what you're finding and how you're leveraging your DTC degree in interesting, creative ways.

I just received great news from a May '09 grad who was offered seven (yes, I'm not kidding seven) different jobs! Here's part of what he said,

"The types of jobs out there cater to DTC students tremendously. I think I am going to take the job with ****** because they are offering me a job as a Junior Strategist where I deal with interactive marketing, web 2.0 technologies etc. If it were not for DTC, I would not have been able to discuss these topics and my skills in the interview. So I wanted to say thank you. Thank you for the guidance and encouragement and opening my mind and teaching me skills that will make me successful in life. I start July 1st!"

Rumors about DTC????

Hi,

I was asked twice today about a rumor that DTC is moving to Vancouver. Dr. Arola heard this too.

This is absolutely, positively wrong. DTC is staying in Pullman. Should I repeat that?? DTC is staying in Pullman.

DTC in Pullman is established at 100 majors strong, and we're sticking around. Keep recruiting too. Although majors will now have to certify, we have room for a bunch of new people next fall. We want to keep the program at 100 majors until we can hire another faculty person. That's a good deal because we're committed to keeping classes small and standards high.

P. S. DTC also exists in Vancouver and Tri-Cities. All three campuses have DTC programs. That's one of the many cool things about the major.

See your Advisor!!

Don't put off seeing your advisor until the last minute. All DTC advisors are great at advising, but they're also teachers, administrators, and have other responsibilities. They aren't just available the minute you decide you want to get organized for registration.

Most of us need at least a few days notice to get you booked. So plan ahead. Please. We want to do a great job for you, but can't do that unless you give us some lead time.

And when you email your advisor, make sure to address him/her properly. All of us have PhD's so starting out on a "Dr." basis is a good policy. Then you can move to less formality if the "decorum" calls for that.

Summer 2009 Internship

Position: Web Developer

Location: Prosser, WA/Richland, WA *but* can be done remotely from Pullman

Timeline: June 8 - August 7, 15-20 hrs/week, PAID

Details: Doug Walsh (Coordinator of Integrated Pest Management) and Sally O'Neal (Research and Extension Communication Specialist) are looking for a Web Developer to update the IPM website (http:www.ipm.wsu.edu) to conform with the new WSU web standards (http://www.identity.wsu.edu/web/) and to perform other web design/maintenance tasks as needed and as time permits. The student will be under supervision of Sally O'Neal, but will work primarily on his/her own in order to implement the new template and to add any new content requested by Walsh or O'Neal.

Skills Required:
* Ability to carefully follow written instructions (a necessity for implementing WSU templates)
* Familiarity with CSS/XHTML
* Familiarity with FTP
* Proficiency with Dreamweaver
* Good time management skills
* Self-motivated and deadline driven
* Comfortable with teleconferencing
