Summer Web Internship (edit:POSITION FILLED 4/25)

This project is great for someone who wants to build their portfolio, needs a little extra money, and doesn't mind working alone.

In short, Professor Nancy Bell in the WSU English Dept needs this site redesigned:

http://www.aml.wsu.edu/facultysites/EnglishLearningCenter/index.html

Professor Bell says,
"The site is designed to be primarily a place for students who are taking ESL (english as a second language) classes in the English department to use to find resources to help them with writing in and out of class, and also for teachers in our program to use as a place to share materials they’ve developed. In addition, though, faculty across the university might come upon the site in their search for support for ESL students in their own classes and it will eventually have links to workshops that might help them that are posted on International Programs site, and any other resources that might be available on campus.

As such, I’d like to take the content that’s there and put it into a more identifiably-WSU format. I’m hoping for something that identifies us as part of the institution, but without looking “institutional” – I think this is especially important as I want it to look appealing to the students who will be its primary users."

Interested? Email Professor Arola @ arola@wsu.edu

Winery Jobs? Job musings from Patty's Travels

I was in Yakima Valley over the weekend and talked to several people in the area wineries--quite of few of them Cougs. In talking about WSU, the DTC degree came up and, without exception, they said something like--wow, we so need a person like that!

So as you're job hunting, make sure you take a look at all kinds of possibilities including industries that you might not have thought of before. Almost every industry with a public "face" needs someone like you! Remember too, that Washington state has a huge food industry--fruit, potatoes and much, much more. The groups promoting and selling our food crops might need a person with abilities like yours.

Here's an example of a wine industry job that's suited for a DTC grad. Although you might not have enough background for this job, this is the kind of thing that even smaller wineries are looking for. http://winebusiness.com/services/jobdetail.cfm?listingId=42815

BTW, for those of you who are interested, I am enjoying sabbatical. I'm reading, writing, and researching, but also getting the opportunity to travel here in Washington and other places. I'll be traveling a lot in the next couple months, but will be back to see many of you graduate. That will be awesome. Go cougs!

Graphic Novel Talk

Artist Jim Woodring will present an informal talk about his latest wordless graphic novel titled 'Weathercraft' at 9:10am on Tuesday the 9th in room 7086 in the Fine Arts Center.

Woodring's works are published through Fantagraphics in Seattle, and he also exhibits paintings and objects internationally. Jim Woodring’s cartoons chart a course through some of the most surreal imagery ever seen in any artistic medium, drawing visions from the realms of the subconscious to create a graphic world of dreams. But while his work may speak in the language of dreams, Woodring’s life has often led him into nightmare territory.

Summertime in Pullman? Internship?

If anyone out there is thinking ahead to summer and might need an internship, I have a great one. The Community Action Center here in Pullman needs a redesign of their site. DTC356 will be doing the organizational work for the project, so you'll receive the majority of content, link structure, and general info architecture. It'll be your job to design around it and to teach folks at CAC how to update it. Interested? Let Professor Arola know asap.
